NUA Surgical was developed out of BioInnovate Ireland and is dedicated to innovating in Women’s Health. The team are currently pursuing solutions to unmet clinical needs in obstetric surgery. In 2018, the founding team secured a 2 year Research and Commercialisation Grant from Enterprise Ireland to develop the SteriCISION C-Section Retractor at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). The patent pending technology is licenced to NUA Surgical Limited.

In December 2018, NUA Surgical was selected to take part in the inaugural LaunchPad Lift Powered by Techstars programme. LaunchPad Lift identifies top-performing University start-ups from across the LaunchPad global network of 20 Universities, and pairs them with resources and opportunities to help their ventures succeed.
In September 2019, NUA Surgical was selected as a regional finalist (Connacht & Leinster) in the InterTradeIreland Seedcorn competition.
In November 2019, Barry McCann, founder and CEO of NUA Surgical was named ‘Best Senior Entrepreneur’ at the EIT Health Alumni Needs-Led Innovation Showcase in Lisbon, Portugal.
In June 2020, NUA Surgical was one of 16 start-up companies across the UK and Ireland to receive the EIT Health Headstart award of €40,000.
In December 2020, NUA Surgical was crowned the overall winner of the Intertrade Ireland Seedcorn Competition, securing €100,000 prize fund.
The company is currently raising a seed investment round and is seeking suitable investors to partner with to bring their innovative technology to market.
