Fourth State was founded in 2013 by a physicist and an engineer. They knew that plasma had been shown to reduce bacteria in wounds and surfaces and to help chronic wounds to heal. Medical practitioners were convinced this was an important technology. This is how Fourth State’s mission to bring plasma medicine to the mainstream began.

Using modern rapid prototyping techniques and lean development cycles the team created their first “Dual Plasma” device to prevent bacteria from multiplying and to demonstrate a unique, minimally invasive approach to removing cosmetic skin complaints.

Fourth State patented their technology and collaborated with a world leading UK cosmetic surgeon to provide hands-on clinical evaluation and practical advice on the industrial design of the Nebulaskin dual plasma system for cosmetic treatments- now available for sale. In parallel, the system was used to demonstrate the prevention of the spread of Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus bacteria in vitro. Following this pilot Fourth state is working with clinicians and academic experts in skin conditions and wound healing, funded by the British Skin Foundation and the MedCity “Collaborate to Innovate program” to deliver a treatment for chronic wounds.

Today, Fourth State is a full-time team of 10 consisting of medical engineers, physicists, regulatory and quality experts. Fourth States executive and science advisory board provides relevant and responsive leadership from the best of industry, business and academia.
