Alzheimer’s strips away a person’s identity, however, many neglect its residual loss: caregiver autonomy.

Alzheimer’s demanding nature requires caregivers to devote a substantial portion of themselves to the patient, forcing them to sacrifice their own lives in the process. In 2015, the Alzheimer’s Association reported that 74% of Alzheimer’s caregivers voice concerns towards their own health and financial security. This disease repeatedly forces the caregiver to choose between themself and their loved one, instigating feelings of guilt regardless of which decision they make.

To restore caregiver autonomy, Alois Software hopes to apply artificial intelligence in the home setting to allow caregivers to continue with their normal lives, while still giving their loved one’s the care and attention they need. We plan to develop a wearable device, resembling a necklace, that pairs with a mobile application to alert caregivers when Alzheimer’s patient are in danger.

The product will be using an existing mobile application – artificial intelligence framework composed of a React-Native frontend, Firebase backend, and Tensorflow deep learning model. Additionally, our necklace will contain various sensors that track visual and auditory cues, and will be worn by an Alzheimer’s patient to serve as our primary input device. This data will then be passed into our app that will be on the caregiver’s phone.

We believe our product will succeed because we have an emphasis on clinical research. No company using assistive technologies (to date) to tackle problems surrounding Alzheimer’s and dementia has tested their product in a clinical setting with their target demographic. Alois Software firmly believes in patient centered healthcare; by tailoring our solution to the Alzheimer’s and dementia population, we strive to create something that’s not just another product, but rather a life supplement.
